Dual offers a darkly comedic sci-fi story by director Riley Stearns that turns depression and disappointment into a hilarious encounter with death and a distinctly self-portrait story in a grotesque movie with a particularly grotesque performance of the heroine. The movie is at its best depicting depression with a masterful aesthetic, with occasional flashes of startlingly boisterous surrealism. The second half of the movie takes a few turns with a lot more plot detail than the boring first half, but it all is justified in the end, as it allows Dual to offer an even more grotesque version of its premise. Dual may sound familiar conceptually, reflecting the growing concern about human annihilation in the digital world, where identity is no longer confined to the physical self. But the director deals with the idea in a funny and dark manner, which helps him focus on the drama at the center of the movie. A strange movie with its idea, which makes the viewer in a state of constant anticipation.
